In my novel writing, there are many ‘passes’ that the manuscript undergoes on it’s way from being a lump of clay to a finely turned work. The first pass is the gathering together of all the pieces of the work.
I wrote DOV over three periods: as my first NaNoNovel in Nov 2007, as my first Camp NaNo (July 2011), and as my second Camp NaNo (August 2011). Along the way, there have been abortive attempts to continue the work, and a concerted effort to write the ending of the novel as a short story for a themed anthology.
All in all, there are six distinct documents that had to be strung together in some kind of coherent document. Worse, one of the documents consisted of various ‘scenes’ that were designed to be plugged into various parts of the tale.
Lastly, I had to get rid of one of the characters for a while, then bring the character back. All of this work has been going on since the beginning of the month. Finally, on the train ride in this morning, I finished the first pass. Huzzah!
